San Diego's First Auxiliary

About the Columbiettes!

How did the Columbiettes get started?

In 1939 the Columbiettes were started by Msgr. J. Francis
McIntyre (later Cardinal) who conceived an idea of a ladies
organization to work with the Knights of Columbus.
John Leo Coyle, PFN and Charles Maruca, PGK who were both
attorneys were appointed to formulate a plan for this future group of Catholic Women. The Knights enlisted the aid of the
Honorable Margaret Mary J. Mangan, and attorney, who was the second woman to sit as a judge on the New York State Supreme Court.

Judge Mangan was elected the first President of the Supreme Council of Columbiettes. She was a woman of greatness and humility and was dedicated to the Columbiettes. The Columbiettes were always dear to her hear and she brought
honor and glory to the Coumbiettes in all aspects of her career as a state Supreme Court Justice and a Catholic woman.

The Columbiettes, following the example of their founders, dedicate themselves to do Gods work on earth promoting unity, Christs love for each of us and zeal to serve God through Faith, Hope and Charity.

What is your purpose?

Our Purpose is to promote the spiritual, social and charitable welfare of our members, to instill a steadfast conviction relating to the proper place and function of Catholic women in safeguarding the religious, civil and economic rights of all Catholics and to rely upon the intercession of Mary, our mother and model, for guidance in guarding the common good, and to work through her on loving and aiding all members of the human family and to give assistance to the Knights of Columbus in all their activities upon request.

What does your logo represent, is there a meaning?

The Colombiettes, dedicated to our Patronesses, Blessed Virgin Mary, St. Theresa the Little Flower, and St. Joan of Arc, are comprised of affiliated Auxiliaries of the Knights of Columbus Councils.

The Blue Circle represents the world; the White Cross represents Christ's love for us, by His Crucifixion He redeemed the world; and the Rays represent our zeal to serve God through the Mediums of Faith, Hop and Charity, symbolized by the three White Stars.

Do I have any financial obligation if I join the Columbiettes?

The only financial commitment for members is annual dues of $30. This fee covers the creation of name badges as well as contributions to both our national and state councils.

I'm married, does my husband have to be a Knight?

No, while we are affiliated with the Knights of Columbus, membership is open to any practicing Catholic woman who is 18 or older and eager to join a supportive community focused on prayer, fundraising, and fellowship with fellow Columbiettes.

When do your Columbiettes meet?

This auxiliary meets the 3rd Wednesday of each month, except July and December, at 7pm at Mission San Diego.
